Veg Patch

Possibly I have too much time on my hands if spending hours in the garden and greenhouses and then fiddling about on the computer to create a decorative record of what I hope the veg patch will look like this summer?!

Naturally my veg-patch plan seems to change every few days as I tot-up how many seedlings and young plants are coming along.  However, let's face facts, there's only so much space available and therefore, it is highly likely that in a few weeks the extra plants and an 'honesty box' will be feature resplendently on the cottage steps!

Healthy self-care; be inspired!

Suggestions for healthy self-care, be inspired!

Simply, being in the right mindset is essential to navigate any major disruption and the stress that this inevitably causes.  In order to manage and overcome stress, reduce anxiety, be optimistic and to thrive can be brought about by making a few easy choices:

  • increasing your sleep
  • improving your diet
  • meditation, and
  • reducing alcohol intake.
Suggestions for healthy self-care:
  • Early morning light stimulates the pineal gland, helping to set your circadian rhythm, good for energy, clarity and sleep. Go outside in the morning and get some sunlight on your face - as little as two minutes is beneficial.
  • Be MINDFUL of your surroundings: Get into nature - notice the freshness of the air, the changing colours and light of the season, go barefoot on the grass.
  • Daily meditation and breathing exercises (some favourite apps: Insight Timer, Calm, Smiling Minds)
  • Do daily exercise: a home workout routine, riding, walking, yoga, dancing, walk the dog, stretch and strengthen; then soak in a bath with Epsom salts and essential oils.
  • Limit exposure to IT and non-essential media: limit the social media vortex and the overwhelm of endless "news", your nervous system and stress response will thank-you for it.
  • Maintain your healthcare treatments and take natural medicines and supplements to support immune and nervous system function, and gut health.
  • Connect with family and friends: be present and in the moment.
  • Prepare healthy meals, eat regularly and choose well; limit sugar, refined carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol.
  • Laugh and have fun:  make each other laugh and share funny things you've seen or heard.
  • Stay hydrated:  drink lots of water and herbal teas (ginger, lemongrass, echinacea, olive leaf, cinnamon, peppermint, nettle, dandelion)
  • Slow down, make time for things you love to do.  Allow yourself to do it, this time is unique.
  • Get to bed early:  try to keep a good sleep hygiene routine - no screens for at least an hour before bed, no electronic devices in the bedroom, total darkness, cool room temperature, good air flow.  Adults should aim for 8 hours sleep, more if needed.

VENUS in the Sky with Diamonds

April 27th and 28th 2020 are the dates to check out the skies as Venus is at its brightest in years.  Venus appears every two years or so, it’s usually rather low but now it’s as high as it can get, and at its brightest. And although Venus has been visible after sunset since the autumn, it is now at its very best.

Venus can be seen from anywhere in the world by just looking westerly once the sun has set. Venus will be visible halfway between the horizon and the zenith (above your head).

Venus is the second planet from the sun and Earth's closest neighbour and is the brightest object in our night sky aside from the moon, and is very similar to Earth both in size and in gravity levels.

Check the planet out now as during May Venus will rapidly sink lower and will vanish into the sun’s twilight glare by June 3rd 2020.

Lists?

Despite the current enforced stay-at-home restrictions coupled with work ‘furlough’, one would think that the extra ‘free time’ would mean getting on top of the “to do” lists…. hmm, not in this household it seems!

I started this Blog on the 13th April and got as far as uploading a photograph.  So it has taken over a week to summon the wherewithal to start writing, as well as to respond to accumulated emails, messages and cards [thanks, and apologies].  So, currently, this pretty much sums me up – my concentration and energy are somewhat erratic!  At times I find myself standing, trowel or dishcloth in hand, gazing blankly into the middle-distance; sometimes I am thinking of nothing at all, or nothing that I can remember, and other times I am thinking about my sister Kate, and the rest of the family.  Therefore, this furlough period is probably for the best as it may allow me to digest the past (pretty dreadful) few weeks.

Having said that, I am very fortunate insofar as Paul and I enjoy living at No.6 and are lucky enough to have a decent sized garden – which is where we have been expending all our energies and even a few small jobs have been addressed in the house too.

I’m [literally] pottering on.  I feel subdued, and quiet.  I do not really want to talk to anyone, and I am quite happy just being with Paul.  As the weather has been so glorious lately, and as is the habit of the British, we have spent as much time as possible outside just in case it decides to revert back to grey ‘tupperware’ conditions!    To be honest, if you looked at Paul you might think he had been on holiday!  His face and arms are so brown from being in the garden, in the sun… and not putting enough sun-cream on!?*!  I am almost as bad, but I remembered the factor 30 more often!!

So, I think you would be impressed with all the work that has been accomplished over the past few weeks:
  • Sown more seeds (for succession planting – Geoff* would approve)
  • Thinned out seedlings (as instructed by the books)
  • Re-potted a lot of my home-grown plants
  • ‘Hardening-off’ some plants so they can be planted out (hopefully) by the end of the month.
Paul has moved and then re-aligned the path flagstones (that sounds a bit posh, I think they’re just concrete slabs) and has re-seeded in-between so it should emerge as a lush, weed-free grassed approach up to the garden gate…. and then, of course, the excitement continues with the vista beyond?*!

Well, we’re getting there…

Gently Occupied

Like the majority of people, we are keeping ourselves occupied; quietly and gently so.  Paul finds it's fairly easy to chill-out and can immerse himself in a crossword puzzle or doze placidly in the April sun, but at the moment I appear to have a suffice of nervous energy - although to be honest, this might be a degree of anxiety and low-level hysteria.

Therefore now being out of the strictly enforced two weeks' of isolation I have ventured out twice - once to the local Co-op (on Saturday) and yesterday to Cleeve Hill where I met a good friend for a walk at the prescribed 2 metre distance from each other - and anyone else out walking dogs or jogging. Naturally we spent a good hour huffing and puffing up and down the hill, whilst putting the world to rights!

I came home to find Paul sanding-down the outside door (we only have one), which he then painted with a rich brown stain.  We have owned the house for about twelve years and this is the first time it has been done!  (Ahem).

I spent most of the day re-potting seedlings and planting out those more established vegetables - specifically the purple sprouting broccoli.

I also sowed sweet red peppers, chilli peppers, leeks, and for succession planting, more peas, dwarf French beans, runners, tomatoes and so on and so forth.

However, it does seem that we are in danger of becoming a bit obsessive - forget pampered pooches, we have mollycoddled cauliflowers!!  Paul created a wind-break for those in the raised-bed who were being agitated and harassed by a brisk  breeze on Sunday!?

All Ahead, Full Stop.

Without stating the bleedin' obvious, it's a very weird time for everyone isn't it?  Across the world we are in lock-down or isolation of some sort.  I personally haven’t been out from the confines of house and garden for nearly two weeks now.  I was with my sister Kate, albeit briefly, the day before she passed away, and the cause of death recorded on the official paperwork was Covid19, so obviously I have had to be in complete isolation.

My family is ticking-along as well as can be expected, and we all speak regularly on the phone or via Facetime. We are not allowed to actually get together as a family and a proper funeral will NOT happen, and that is very upsetting.   My niece confirmed earlier today that the “non-funeral” will take place next Wednesday; a service that nobody can actually go to, but will be a regular cremation, with music of our choice playing (if we want) and someone (an official) saying a few words.
Paul and I have been spending quite a bit of time in the garden, greenhouses and shed; as I am now officially on ‘furlough’ too, I don’t feel too guilty just pottering about!  The most exciting thing that has happened recently is that we had our first ever food delivery yesterday afternoon!  It was from Hayles Fruit Farm-shop as it now seems that none of the ‘biggies’ (Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose) are taking on new registrations…! The order was a tad more expensive but then again, it was either that or start gnawing bits of cardboard or munch on the seedlings in the greenhouse!  BUT, joking aside, all the produce was of good quality, locally sourced (on the whole), and covered all categories – dairy, meat, vegetable, salad, fruit.  The delivery was free too!

We haven’t done any shopping for over two weeks anyway, because we were already on isolation before the official national lock-down came into play.  As it is, our neighbours have been very generous – when they go to the local shops they have picked up basics for us – bread, milk, cheese, fresh veg.

Pink Moon - 7th April 2020

1/4/2020

Picture
April’s Super ‘Pink’ Moon Will Be the Brightest Full Moon of 2020;  this will rise into the night sky on April 7th.

Despite the name, the moon will not have a rosy hue, instead the name alludes to pink wildflowers called creeping phlox that bloom in April.  The colour will not be any different to normal -it will be golden orange when low in the sky, and brighten to white as it rises.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon happens on the same night the moon reaches perigee, or the closest point to Earth in its orbit. (Apogee is its furthest point from Earth in its orbit.) On April 7th, the moon will be about 30,000 miles closer, only 221,772 miles from Earth.

The scientific term for the astronomical event is “perigee-syzygy.”  Other full moons in April have been called Sprouting Grass, Egg, and Fish moon, which all evoke thoughts of early spring. This year’s super pink moon is also a paschal moon because of its closeness to Easter, which is 12th April 12th.
